Grandmother’s Nuts

Grandma Richardson holds a tradition decades old
A family Christmas tale, finally told
The making of this most nostalgic treat
Tells a story more meaningful than any holiday sweet

It begins with a Grandmother quite special to me
Who made the holidays as magical as could be
In her little yellow home, alive with garland and Christmas bling
Our Grandmother Hallie was known for one more special thing

She was as sweet as honey and as strong as a horse
But her nuts were her signature trait, of course
Delicious and fancy, they were a sight to behold
Hallie,s Almonds we called them, and they glittered like gold

We waited all year for this joy-filled night
Eating pie by the fire ‘till we couldn,t fit one more bite
Dressed snuggly in our flannel pajamas, we leapt into bed
As visions of almonds danced in our heads

In the morning she would appear, a most anticipated sight
With batches of goodness, roasted with patience and delight
She handed them out, tacky tin by tin
With a sparkle in her eye, and a wink and a grin

Her recipe stayed a family secret long after she passed
Oh how I tried unsuccessfully to recreate it, and finally, at last
A tight lipped cousin had the concoction, and confessed that he knew
And now I am sharing it as my gift of gratitude to you

May the legacy of Grandmother,s nuts add to your holidays this year
A very Merry Christmas and happy New Year from all of us here!
