CAVE CREEK CASE STUDY
Nestled just north of Phoenix and surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, Cave Creek is home to the beautiful Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. In celebration of the Conservation Area’s 25th anniversary, a new monument was unveiled at the trailhead on January 9, 2026.
It was an incredible honor for all of us at R Squared to be part of this meaningful project. Working on the monument was not only a rewarding experience, but also an opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to a landmark that celebrates the area’s rich history and natural beauty. As always, we embraced the challenge with creativity and enthusiasm, and we’re proud to have created something our client—and the community—can enjoy for years to come.
Our Process
Every project begins with exploration, and this one was no exception. Before putting pencil to paper, we visited the site to experience the landscape firsthand and understand the environment where the monument would live. We explored the overlook, studied the surrounding monuments, and immersed ourselves in the natural beauty of the conservation area.
The only direction we were given was to create something that identified the surrounding mountains. Rather than producing a simple two-dimensional map, we challenged ourselves to create an experience that was both informative and interactive.
Our first concept featured a topographical map, allowing visitors to see and physically feel the mountains in miniature while identifying each peak. The second concept highlighted the distinctive silhouettes of the surrounding mountain ranges, with each one labeled so visitors could recognize them by their unique profiles against the horizon.
As we evaluated the site, we also noticed that each existing monument was supported by rustic steel boxes filled with native boulders. It was important that our design felt like a natural extension of the trailhead rather than an isolated addition. To honor the character of the space, we incorporated the same rustic materials and matching base design, ensuring the new monument blended seamlessly with its surroundings while complementing the existing installations.
Logistics
While we gathered preliminary pricing and worked through the basic logistics before presenting our concepts to the client, we intentionally avoided getting too deep into the details until a direction was approved. Once a concept is selected, that’s when the real work begins.
From there, we dive into every detail required to transform an idea into reality. We carefully consider everything—from determining the ideal size of the panoramic display and the optimal viewing height based on the average person’s perspective, to selecting materials that can withstand Arizona’s intense sun while remaining beautiful and durable for decades.
We even researched the best chemical patinas to achieve the desired rustic appearance without compromising the structural integrity of the metal. Every decision is made with both aesthetics and longevity in mind.
This stage of the project requires us to wear many different hats. One moment we’re thinking like engineers, the next we’re researching material science or solving fabrication challenges. It’s a process of anticipating every scenario, overcoming obstacles before they arise, and ensuring the final product is as functional as it is beautiful.
Saying goodbye to our baby
Every design project reaches a point where it must be handed off to skilled craftsman who bring the vision to life. Whether it’s sending artwork to the printer or delivering fabrication drawings to a metal shop, there comes a time when we entrust our work to experts with a different set of talents.
For this project, the Town of Cave Creek partnered with a local artist to fabricate and weld the monument. While we typically collaborate with one of our trusted, long-time fabrication partners, this project gave us the opportunity to work alongside someone new.
One of the most rewarding aspects of creative work is collaborating with talented professionals who each bring their own expertise to the table. Watching the design evolve from drawings on a screen into a beautifully crafted, full-scale monument is always an exciting part of the process, and this project was no exception.
The big reveal
Once the project left our hands, we eagerly attended the monument’s unveiling to see the finished piece in its new home. While the final result included a few artistic touches that differed from our original vision, the local artist brought their own creative perspective to the project.
Most importantly, the Town of Cave Creek was thrilled with the finished monument. Seeing the community embrace and appreciate the final piece made the entire journey worthwhile. At the end of the day, our greatest measure of success is a happy client, and we’re proud to have been part of creating a landmark the town can enjoy for years to come.
