Getty Offers Free Images!!

That’s right, Getty Images recently deiced to make over 35 million of their photos free for non-commercial use with a new HTML embed option. When used, the image is embedded with the photographers credit and shareable options under each image. This is the way images found online should be done in the first place but realistically proper credit (if any at all) is rarely given by people who just save and use images taken from search engines. Getty realized the pirating problem and decided to make a legal version that gives credit where credit is due. Craig Peters, senior vice president of business development, product and content at Getty Images, told CNET Australia “What we’re trying to do is take a behavior that already exists and enable it legally, then try to get some benefits back to the photographer primarily through attribution and linkage.”

Here is an actual embeded image from Getty.

This is fantastic news for small-medium sized blogs that want to have eye-catching images with their blog posts but don’t have a photography budget to work with. Now, almost every blog post can have a visual to accompany it without being cost prohibitive and the photographers (and Getty) will get the proper recognition.

What do you think about this new model?
